CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION: GOVERNOR’S WIFE TASKS WALGON TO FACILITATE SUCCESSFUL VACCINATION OF GIRLS IN THEIR LOCALITIES

Wives of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (WALGON), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, have been charged to be actively involved in ensuring that teenage girls in their localities between the ages of 9 to 14 are available for the administration of the Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine, a vaccination that will prevent them from contacting cervical cancer.

The wife of the State Governor, Pastor Patience Umo Eno gave the charge when members of WALGON paid a courtesy visit to her in Government House, Uyo.

Pastor Eno implored the wives of Chairmen as frontline leaders in their communities to have a regular interface with women at the grassroots and dialogue on how to promote the family standard of living, thereby ensuring a safe and secure society.

The Governor’s wife said her pet project, which will be unveiled soon, focuses on the wellbeing of families and has already commenced its activities, such as reaching out to the less privileged members of society and providing succour to them.

While soliciting support and constructive ideas and hosting events and programs for the success of her vision for families, the Governor’s wife noted that her pet project is in line with the ARISE Agenda of her husband, Governor Umo Eno, and called on wives of local Government Chairmen to be actively involved in interpreting her vision for the state.

“The key focus of my soon-to-be-unveiled pet project is the family, and I welcome ideas from you on what can be done to help an average Akwa Ibom family. My interest in the family began when I discovered the difficulties in finding a united family in the local government, where I lived for a while. And so I will need you to project and support the family.”

“I have had a burden to help hurting families unite, and God has given me this opportunity, so I want you all, as front-line female Stakeholders in your respective Local Government Areas, to model how families should be for others to emulate because you cannot give out what you do not have,” she added.

“It is very important that this focus on family values starts with us. You will not be able to help if you do not know what you are doing in your family. Suppose you do not know what you are doing as the wife of the Chairman of the Local Government where all the women look up to you. The support I need from all of you is for you to think of whatever events, activities, and programmes that will promote family values in your Local Government Areas, so the vision of the ARISE Agenda will be properly interpreted,” she said.

Speaking earlier, the Chairperson, Wives of Local Government Council of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Mrs. Maria-Therese Robson, while praising the Governor’s wife for granting them an audience, said the purpose of their visit was to inform Her Excellency of the end of their husbands’ tenure as Local Government Chairmen will end in the coming weeks.

She appealed to the First Lady to carry them along in her projects for the State and assured that they were willing and ready to partner with her even after their husbands had vacated office as Local Government Council Executives.

Mrs Robson, who is also the wife of Esit Eket Local Government Chairman, assured Pastor Patience Eno of her members capacity for grassroots mobilization for the success of the Arise Agenda of the Umo Eno administration.

Highpoint of the visit was the presentation of 260 pieces of wrappers to the Wife of the Governor as support for the activities in her office.
