Eket Local Government Chairman Rt. (Hon.) Akaniyene Tommey has reiterated his administration’s commitment to partnering with (NMEC) a non-formal education agency (NMEC) to revitalize adult and youth literacy in Eket LGA.
The chairman made this known while receiving members of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education (NMEC) in a courtesy visit at his Eket local government council office.
He thanked the NMEC state coordinator for his support and encouragement towards developing non-formal Education and adult education in the state and assured the NMEC of his effort to synergize, increase collaboration and accelerate the growth of Adult Education in Eket LGA.
The Akwa Ibom State Coordinator NMEC, Mr Charles Onwuchekwa, stated that there is an urgent need for concrete efforts to improve mass literacy in the area. According to Onwuchekwa, the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education was established in 1990 with a mandate to provide primary education to the country’s non-literate adults and youths aged 15 and above through a non-formal approach.
The state coordinator called on the Council chairman to encourage the celebration of international literacy day coming up on September 8th, 2023, as it will be geared towards the overall social and economic development in the Eket Local Government Area.
In his subsequent tour of the council’s education department, Mr Onwuchekwa interacted with the Director of Education, Mr Ubong Mbong and his staff to strategize developing Non-Formal Education and Adult Education in the local government area.
He further called on establishing an NMEC centre in Eket LGA to support Adult Education and Non-Formal Education with vocational training facilities for the betterment of the people who could not meet early Education—stating that the visit also aimed to collaborate with the council to establish the NMEC office in Eket council.

The Director of SDEISC, Eket Local Government Council, Mr Mbong, commended NMEC state coordinator for his effort and commitment to bringing Adult education to Eket people and appealed to the government to assist the agency in achieving its laudable objectives/policies in the areas.
