Born February 2, 1965. Rt. Hon (Obong) Saturday Michael Akpan hails from Ikot Akpa Nkuk in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Obong Saturday Akpan started serving his people in 1992 when he was appointed Supervisor for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Ukanafun LGA.
In 1996 he was elected Vice Chairman Ukanafun LGA where he served meritoriously.
Obong Saturday Akpan was appointed in 1999 as Principal Legislative Assistant, House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria, a position he served till 2002.
Just like the golden fish without any hiding place …His people in 2003 gave him the mandate to represent them in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, a position he held till 2007. While in the Assembly, he served as Chairman, House Committee on Commerce and Industry and later as Chairman, House Committee on Education.
Obong Akpan was nominated as National Delegate representing Ukanafun at the 2013 PDP Special Convention in Abuja.
Served as Organizing Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between 2016-2020.
He was also Member, Akwa Ibom State Local Government Election Committee for the Peoples Democratic Party in 2020.
Currently serving as Leader of Congress of Former State Legislators, Akwa Ibom State, a position he was elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2021.
Many may begin to wonder how Hon. Saturday Akpan had risen so fast in the political space and attained such greater heights in record time.
It is worthy of mention that Obong Akpan as has had his day of little but very humble beginning having worked in different organizations both in the public and the private sectors namely:
i. Cross River State Teaching Service Commission as Auxiliary Teacher, Community Secondary School, Nkele between 1983-1984.
ii. Defunct Nigerian Cocoa Board, Calabar as Shipping Assistant between 1984 – 1986.
iii. Tony Anthony Nigeria Limited, Port Harcourt, 1986-1987.
iv. Karda Investment Limited, Port Harcourt, 1987-1989
In November 2021, Governor Udom Gabriel Emmaneul after many months of search to replace the former Commissioner I, Hon. Aniekan Akpan (Now PDP Chairman, Akwa Ibom State) found Rt. Hon. Saturday Michael Akpan a perfect fit to serve in that capacity.
Rt. Hon. Saturday Akpan has had many awards including Best Legislator, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Patron Nigerian Union of Local Government Employee for his outstanding dedication to the Union and the society at large. He is also the Ata Uyo Ukanafun, Mkpouto Afaha, among others.
Rt. Hon. Saturday Akpan fondly called “Prosper” is married to Patience and the Union is blessed with five children.
This appointment completes the Statutory configuration of Five Commissioners working under the dynamic and pragmatic leadership of Hon. Monday Eyo- Chairman, Local Government Service Commission
