Plans for World Press Freedom Day 2024 have been set in motion following Professor Nkereuwem Etukudoh’s acceptance to chair the big event.
Speaking with the Central Planning Committee at his country home, Midim, Abak, Prof Etukudoh described the event as remarkable, whose journey will create and ensure the rebirth of journalism in the state.
He furthered that it was worth modeling what the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is doing by accommodating people from different works of life to make them one.
Hear him, “I will be there to Chair the event to a good success,” while praying to God for the success of the event. He appreciated members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, and the Central Planning Committee for choosing him and the visitation. He prayed to God to bless them immensely.
Earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Comrade Gabriel Ekaidem, intimated the Professor about the theme of the day, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis”, and sub-theme, ^navigating press freedom through unity in cultural diversity^ adding that it will be centered on traditional symposium where members of the union will display various traditional attires.
Reeling out events proposed for the international day, Ekaidem informed that the unveiling ceremonies of the World Press Freedom Day logo are slated for Wednesday, 27th March 2024, at 3.00 pm, while the main event will be held on Friday, 3rd May 2024, at 10.00 am, all at the NUJ Press Center.
“The 2024 World Press Freedom Day will feature a keynote presentation and traditional parade by various chapels of the union, including NAWOJ. It is a way to promote and preserve our traditional life, beliefs, and values. Areas of focus include the significant roles played by the press, journalism, access to, and dissemination of reliable information to ensure and secure a sustainable future that respects the rights of individuals and their diversity of voices, as well as gender equality.
He maintained that the Day will serve as a platform to bring together key actors to reflect on the fundamental role of journalism and reliable information in protecting the planet while discussing topics, including The importance of reliable and accurate information, especially that which denounces and investigates the environmental crisis and its effects.
